This is an ultrasound of your shoulder by a Consultant Radiologist, who will, if able and warranted, guide a needle into your calcification under direct vision. Breaking up the calcific deposits is done by repeatedly puncturing them with a needle and aspirating the calcific material, usually with the help of repeatedly injecting and aspirating saline. Following the procedure, an injection of Cortisone (Steroid) and local anaesthetic may be used.
Following the procedure you will be asked to rest in the Surgery for 15 minutes. You will be asked not to drive following the procedure and therefore you may wish to bring a friend or a relative with you or alternatively use public transport.
There may be instances that the procedure may be refused – such as if you have contraindications to having a Steroid injection or if clinically an injection would not be warranted. In such circumstances, you will only be charged for the Ultrasound scan – which is £125 (£145 for Consultant Radiologist).
